Ice skater, Nicole Bobek, won the 1995 U.S. Figure Skating Championship and also was ranked third in the world that year. She competed in the 1998 Winter Olympics. She was known for her infectious and happy personality. This personality was famous on and off the ice.In 2009, Bobek was arrested on drug charges. She was charged with being part of a drug ring. It is said that Nicole Bobek may face up to ten years in prison if convicted. (source)

Yeah, I think the drugs explain the attitude. I’m sure everyone was wondering where they could get that same kind of permanent euphoria. Happiness is just s shady neighborhood away, or in Bobek’s case, the closest skating rink?

But cutthroat it is. *cough Tonya Harding cough* Another infamous incident would have to be the scandal regarding the Olympic Winter Games and the Russian pair skating’s dubious gold medal. Despite some technical errors in the Russians’ set, the Russians were awarded the gold medal in the pair skating event. This was much to the surprise of everyone watching, since the Canadians had skated flawlessly. Soon after the rumors started flying that there had been pressures to make sure the Russians took the gold.

Ottavio Cinquanta, head of the International Skating Union, said judge Marie-Reine Le Gougne of France told the ISU she was under “a certain pressure” to vote for the Russians, leaving the Canadians with silver.

When asked after a news conference whether the pressure came from the French federation, Cinquanta replied, “This is the allegation.”

Le Gougne was suspended indefinitely and has signed a statement about how she reached her vote, Cinquanta said. There was no evidence of Russian involvement, he added, without giving further details about Le Gougne’s motivation.

“This pressure resulted in putting this judge in a condition not to give the gold medal” to the Canadians, Cinquanta said. “We have declared misconduct.”

French federation president Didier Gailhaguet denied the federation put pressure on Le Gougne, who had checked out of her hotel in Salt Lake City. ISU rules prohibit her from discussing her votes publicly.

But in a tearful moment during an ISU review session Tuesday, Le Gougne named Gailhaguet as the one who exerted pressure on her to vote for the Russians, The Washington Post reported on its Web site Friday.

“You don’t understand! You don’t understand!” lead referee Ron Pfenning quoted Le Gougne as saying, according to the newspaper. “The pressure is enormous! There is so much pressure that my federation, that the president, Didier, put on me to put the Russians first! You’ve got to help! You’ve got to help!” Read on…

On February 1, 1994, Harding’s ex-husband accepted a plea bargain in exchange for his testimony against Harding. Harding avoided further prosecution and a possible jail sentence by pleading guilty on March 16 to hindering the investigation of the attack. She received three years probation, 500 hours of community service and a $160,000 fine. She maintained her innocence of and disgust at the attack, and got a tattoo of an angel on her back, allegedly as a symbol of her innocence. In her 2008 autobiography, The Tonya Tapes, Harding said that she wanted to call the FBI to reveal what she knew, but refused when Gillooly allegedly threatened her with death following a gunpoint gang rape by Gillooly and two other men she did not know. Gillooly, who subsequently changed his name to Jeff Stone, called the allegations “utterly ridiculous.”^[3]

On June 30, 1994, after conducting its own investigation of the attack, the USFSA stripped Harding of her 1994 title and banned her for life from participating in USFSA-run events as either a skater or a coach. The USFSA concluded that Harding knew about the attack before it happened and displayed “a clear disregard for fairness, good sportsmanship and ethical behavior.”

Regardless of her involvement, this incident completely shattered her career. And Tonya went on to continue her bad girl status. First a scandalous sex tape, then later she chucked a hubcap at former boyfriend Darren Silver. Nice.
