So much so that a reporter said that “he makes Bobby Knight look like an altar boy”.

After a call works against him and his team, Sapergia throws a little temper tantrum – along with every piece of equipment he could get his hands on. All ends up out on the ice in front of his team’s box.

This tantrum served quite nicely to get Sapergia suspended indefinitely.

Twitter is just out to get everyone in trouble. Or, should I say, it’s master plan is to get us all to shove our collective feet into our mouths so far we’ll have no choice but to tweet our discontent.

The latest Twitter tantrum comes from NFL player Larry Johnson. This is no slip of the tweeting tongue. This guy insulted his coach. I’m pretty sure that’s not the way to get resigned to the team come next season. You can see here on this screenshot from Johnson’s oh-so-tasteful Twitter page.

I don’t know what’s less smooth – the insulting tweets or the ridiculous wallpaper.

Johnson’s agent is trying to smooth things over by downplaying the whole incident and insisting that Johnson was only trying to promote his father, and that he meant no disrespect towards his coach. Uh huh.

When this hit the fans, they responded in turn to ol’ Larry. In what quickly became just another trolling war, he threw back a tweet, saying “Make me regret it. Lmao. U don’t stop my checks. Lmao. So ‘tweet’ away.”

I’m pretty sure we the fans don’t sign checks, but I can’t imagine it looks good for the NFL to have its players insulting them. Something about ticket sales and high dollar merchandise comes to mind. Keep up the attitude and Johnson might just be getting a little paycut after all.

NEW YORK — NBA or Europe, regular referees or replacements, the rules are the same: Two technical fouls is an automatic ejection, and anyone ejected must leave the floor.

Maccabi Tel Aviv wanted a pass on that rule Sunday.

The New York Knicks’ 106-91 victory over the Euroleague team featured a bizarre delay in the third quarter when the visiting coach refused to leave after he was ejected.

The game was halted about 8 minutes when Pini Gershon continued to linger near Maccabi’s bench — a delay that included a rabbi trying to intervene by asking the NBA’s replacement referees calling the game to allow Gershon to stay.

“I explained that this is not a regular game and the kids are watching and [it's] important that there will be peace and forgive him,” Rabbi Yitchak Dovid Grossman said of his discussions with the officials. “If you forgive him, I can speak to the children and say, ‘You also forgive. If you have a fight, you forgive.’ But he says this is the law, that you must obey.”

Gershon eventually left after a lengthy discussion with the referees, his assistant coaches and NBA security personnel. A security official said Gershon told them he didn’t care if the game was stopped before he eventually agreed to leave.

“He likes the crowd, the crowd likes him very much,” Maccabi’s Yaniv Green said. “They’re coming to the game to see him even more than they’re coming to see us. He’s quite a character, like you saw today.” (ESPN)

Classy. Just play the game like it’s supposed to be played and you won’t be ejected. Rules are rules, buddy!

Funny that they had to get a rabbi out there to get the coach off the court. I didn’t see that one coming. ESPN has a short clip talking about the Maccabi coach ejection.

On March 10, 1999, the day before the #7 seed Gophers were to open the NCAA tournament against #10 Gonzaga, the St. Paul Pioneer Press ran a story detailing allegations of massive academic fraud in the men’s basketball program. Former basketball office manager Jan Gangelhoff had gone to the newspaper claiming she had written over 400 papers for at least 20 Gopher men’s basketball players over a period of several years, ending in 1998. The next day when the Gophers played Gonzaga, the University suspended players Antoine Broxie, Kevin Clark, Jason Stanford, and Miles Tarver since they allegedely had papers written for them by Ganglehoff in previous seasons. With their roster depleted, the Gophers lost to Gonzaga, the season came to an end, and an internal investigation at the University began.

By June of 1999 and in the midst of their investigation, the university had negotiated a buyout of the remainder of Haskins contract, worth $1.5 million dollars over three years. In the summer of 2000, Haskins came forward and admitted that he had paid Gangelhoff $3,000 for her services; this revelation came to light after Haskins turned his financial records over to the NCAA. In addition, more details were emerging in which Haskins was also accused of mail fraud in an incident regarding a recruits transcript, giving players cash, dismissing sexual harassment concerns against his players, as well as his staff trying to persuade professors to give his players inflated grades they had not earned. After the details of Haskins’ ever-growing involvement became more clear, the University initiated legal action to recover the buyout money. A judge ultimately ruled that Haskins must return just over half of the original $1.5 million buyout.

During this time an NCAA investigation was also underway. They agreed with the University that massive fraud took place under Haskins watch, and stripped the Gophers of all awards and titles dating back to the 1993-94 season citing “Lack of institutional control”. The banners and records stripped included:

* 1993-94: NCAA Tounrament 2nd round
* 1994-95: NCAA Tournament 1st round
* 1995-96: NIT 2nd round
* 1996-97: NCAA Final Four
* 1996-97: Big Ten MVP Bobby Jackson
* 1996-97: Big Ten Defensive POY: Bobby Jackson
* 1997-98: NIT Champions
* 1998-99: NCAA Tournament 1st round
* All wins and personal statistics between 1993-94 and 1998-99

In addition, the basketball program was hit with massive sanctions, including a loss of five scholarships over the following three seasons, recruiting limitations, and department-wide probation lasting four years. There was no post-season ban instituted by the NCAA, however then-University president Mark Yudof ordered a self-imposed post season ban for the 1999-2000 season. (source)

Tsk tsk, boys. You’d think that smart young men such as these would know better than to cheat. Riiiight. And to have the coach shell out 3,000 clams to buy off the manager and get her to write all these papers? That’s desperate and downright sleazy. What happened to coaches being a good influence on their players? I guess Haskins didn’t get the memo.

David Frost, a junior ice hockey coach and NHL Players’ Association agent, is a complete hockey slimeball. He was a nobody until the famous incident in 2004 when player Mike Dalton had a hitman hired to murder Frost. Unfortunately, in addition to the uncomfortable business of having a price on his head, the subsequent media attention opened a nasty can of hockey worms.

In a time period of what pretty much amounts to Frost’s entire hockey coaching/agent career, Frost has been accused of sexually exploiting, molesting, or just plain creeping out his junior hockey players, Danton among them. In fact, Frost seemed to go an extra creepy mile with Danton, which perhaps later led to the mentally imbalanced decision to have Frost killed.

It was clear that the relationship between Danton and Frost was not a normal player-agent arrangement. It turned out that Frost had exercised complete control of Danton’s life, going back to the days when Frost coached him on the Quinte team. Danton and other players who bought into Frost’s program were the closest thing to a cult as you’d find in hockey; but because Danton pleaded guilty, the background to that story was buried. (ESPN)

There were many accusations thrown at Frost over these sexual exploits supposedly going on behind closed hotel doors, mainly heard from the girlfriends of the players.

…two former girlfriends of Quinte players told police investigators about group sex at the apartment that Frost, then in his late 20s, shared with three of the teenaged Hawks in Deseronto, Ontario.At Frost’s trial a few weeks ago, they told Griffin that Frost had not only ordered his players to have sex with the girls, but watched them have sex; that he instructed them on how to have sex as if he was diagramming plays in the locker room; and that at times, he was even more directly involved. One woman said her former boyfriend could only have sex with her if Frost did, too — or the player had to get permission from Frost to have sex with her alone.

It was troubling testimony, and they gave it, even though Griffin denied a prosecution motion to protect their identities. (ESPN)

In the end the whole case was dismissed. Because the girls waited so long to say anything, suspicion arose as to exactly how truthful they were. With so little evidence for for the alleged sexual deviance, there was no way to prove that the actions had occurred. It was his word against theirs. However, his creepy behaviour with underage boys didn’t stop there. And this time there were photos.

In the summer of 2000, Mike’s younger brother Tom Jefferson, then 13, was allowed to take part in a weekend retreat at Frost’s cottage in Kingston, attended also by his older brother Mike and other young hockey players. Upon returning home, Tom was sullen and withdrawn. In June 2001, the parents provided Dr. Brian Shaw, a psychologist with the National Hockey League Players’ Association, with photographs that had been taken that weekend, including one of Tom naked and bound to a bed with duct tape, and another with Frost pointing a rifle at the child.[4] Shaw, as obligated by law, presented the evidence of child abuse to authorities, and an investigation ensued.

Further details of that weekend emerged, including allegations that Tom was forced to eat pancakes that were spat on by Frost; he was shot at with a BB gun while hanging from a tree branch; and that he was ordered to dance naked atop a table for hours. Frost and five other witnesses dismissed the entire incident as a hazing ritual that had been young Tom’s idea to start with, and the investigation was closed. (Wikipedia)

There is a lot of talk that hockey tends to have this darker side when related to player hazing, but as a coach, that just doesn’t give you the right to act like a total jerk. And I’m sorry, there are appropriate activities to engage in with 13 year old kids, and then there’s this. This definitely falls under the category of “inappropriate”. Actually, go ahead and look up inappropriate in your dictionary. You’ll find a picture of David Frost.

Tennessee basketball coach Bruce Pearl made an agonizingly tasteless joke about the diversity of his team at a small function last Thursday. He was speaking to TVA employees without a prepared speech. Perhaps impromptu comedy isn’t Pearl’s strong point?

“I’ve got a tough job. I’ve got to put these guys from different worlds together, right?” Pearl said. “I’ve got guys from Chicago, Detroit … I’m talking about the ‘hood! And I’ve got guys from Grainger County, where they wear the hood.”

Lucky for Pearl, the people from Grainger County turned out to be some pretty laid-back folks, so they didn’t take offense to his foot-in-mouth attempt at humor. Needless to say, Pearl got on the horn quick and issued an apology the next morning.

“Unfortunately while I was trying to excite the crowd and encourage employees to give, I made an inappropriate joke. I certainly did not intend to offend anyone and I apologize to everyone, especially the people of Grainger County.

“In no way am I trying to justify what I said, but I’m disappointed that the focus has been placed on me rather than the charities I was there to help. My only hope is that the visibility of this mistake will encourage those who can to give to those in need during these difficult times.” (source)

He also told police that he later gave Sypher $3,000 to have an abortion, according to Louisville Metro Police reports The Courier-Journal obtained under the Kentucky Open Records Act.

But Pitino denied Sypher’s allegations that he raped her at Porcini, after the restaurant closed, and again a few weeks later at a different location, police records show. And prosecutors who have reviewed Sypher’s claims say Pitino won’t be charged.

On Wednesday, Pitino made a brief statement without notes and apologized “to my loving family, my wife, univeristy officials, as well as my extended family. … I let them down with my indiscretion six years ago and I’m sorry for that.”

He said he will continue to cooperate with the authorities regarding the extortion charges against Sypher.

…Sypher has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiring to extort money from Pitino in exchange for her silence about the alleged crimes, and with lying to the FBI. She has pleaded not guilty.

She reported the alleged rapes to Metro Police on July 9, about two months after she was indicted.

The Metro Police records show that the commander of the sex offense unit, who investigated Sypher’s claims and interviewed her twice in July, found problems in her accounts of both incidents — which he said raised questions about her credibility. (source)

Tsk tsk tsk. Pitino really should’ve have thought twice before engaging in an extramarital affair. For one, didn’t he realize that only jerks cheat on their wives? And second, stay away from the crazy if you insist on being that kind of jerk! In addition to all of the extortion that Sypher has been putting Pitino through, evidence is mounting (haha, get it?) that she has falsely accused Pitino of raping her. One of the dead giveaways? She accused him of sexually assaulting her during a time when records show the two weren’t even in the same state!

Both of these people have earned their spot here on Jockstrapjerks.com. Pitino for cheating on his wife, and Sypher for being an absolute b**ch and falsifying testimonies.

He claimed he meant this as a joke, but if that’s the case, then way to sound like a racist jerk with a bad sense of humor.

While coaching the New Jersey Nets, Calipari referred to Newark Star-Ledger sports reporter Dan Garcia as a “fucking Mexican idiot.”.[12] Garcia sued for $5,000,000 for emotional distress.

“I would like to apologize to Dan Garcia for my ill-advised attempt at humor and insensitivity for the remark,” Calipari said before the Nets lost to the Lakers, 109-84, tonight at the Meadowlands. “In retrospect, I can understand how the remark could have been misinterpreted. I have apologized to him personally and in writing. In no way was my intent to be derogatory in a racial context, and I am sorry for any pain my remarks have caused.”

Seriously folks, it’s just a game! But don’t tell that to basketball coach John Chaney. Tempers flare again in an all out verbal assault (that nearly turns physical) against John Calipari. Summary of the incident from ESPN’s “Coaches Gone Wild”:

Feb. 13, 1994. After Calipari’s 13th-ranked UMass team beat No. 8 Temple 56-55 in Amherst, Temple coach Chaney broke into a postgame press conference being held by Calipari.”I’ll kill your (expletive) ass. You remember that,” Chaney screamed at Calipari. “I’ll kick your ass. Kick your ass.”

Then Chaney, saying that Calipari had intimidated the refs, started toward the UMass coach at the lectern across the room. Gerry Callahan of the Boston Herald described the scene: “With at least one camera rolling and dozens of reporters looking on, Temple coach John Chaney charged Calipari and nearly assaulted him. (Mike) Williams got in the way and Chaney shoved the UMass junior toward Calipari, who was wisely backing up, stunned and amazed. Security guards sprinted into the interview room from all directions while Chaney continued to berate Calipari and thoroughly embarrass himself.”

Chaney apologized after the incident, and was suspended for one game.

And yet again, what would a moment like this be without video evidence? Here we can watch as Chaney lets loose his jerk within.

Not all sports jerks are the players. Coaches can be jerks too. Or so Bobby Knight, men’s college basketball coach, shows us. This guy has a long history of letting his temper get the better of him. The best known example, of course, is the chair throwing incident. Luckily, cameras were rolling during that game, so we are able to relive the the moment.

Another shining moment in Knight’s history of being a real jerk was the interview with NBC’s Connie Chung. Knight talks about being out of control during a game and makes what might just be one of the most insensitive remarks I’ve ever heard:

“I think that if rape is inevitable, relax and enjoy it.”

Wow. He deserved having all those women’s rights groups jump on his back for that one. I don’t care how that comment was supposed to be taken. That is just bad all around.

Overall, Bobby Knight has made so many moves that put him on the jerk scale that I would be here all day just typing them up. Luckily, USA Today did it for me. Read here for an entire listing of all of Knight’s escapades.

However, that list was written in 2006, so it missed the shotgun incident in 2007. But USA Today stays on the ball. Way to go! Thanks to DallasNews.com for video of the incident.
