When you have been blessed with the good fortune to make it onto a major league sports team, why would you risk blowing that chance with something like drug possession? It’s like all that good luck goes to their head and they think they are invincible. Or perhaps they think themselves above the law?

SEATTLE — San Francisco Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum is facing misdemeanor marijuana charges following a traffic stop in his home state. Washington State Patrol spokesman Steve Schatzel said Thursday that the 2008 Cy Young Award winner and former University of Washington star was pulled over for speeding on Interstate 5 in the town of Hazel Dell, about four miles north of the Oregon border, on Oct. 30.

An officer approached Lincecum’s 2006 Mercedes and smelled marijuana as the pitcher rolled down his window. Schatzel said Lincecum immediately complied with a request to hand over the drug and a marijuana pipe from the car’s center console.

The amount measured was 3.3 grams. Schatzel said police consider that a small amount for personal use, well below the maximum of 40 grams before possession is classified differently and carries a more severe penalty.

The arrest was first reported by The Columbian in Vancouver, Wash.

“It was about the size of a thumb, the whole thumb,” Schatzel said of the volume of marijuana Lincecum handed over.

Lincecum was fined a total of $622 for driving at 74 mph in a 60 mph zone, and for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Both are misdemeanors.

Ice skater, Nicole Bobek, won the 1995 U.S. Figure Skating Championship and also was ranked third in the world that year. She competed in the 1998 Winter Olympics. She was known for her infectious and happy personality. This personality was famous on and off the ice.In 2009, Bobek was arrested on drug charges. She was charged with being part of a drug ring. It is said that Nicole Bobek may face up to ten years in prison if convicted. (source)

Yeah, I think the drugs explain the attitude. I’m sure everyone was wondering where they could get that same kind of permanent euphoria. Happiness is just s shady neighborhood away, or in Bobek’s case, the closest skating rink?

If Darryl Strawberry is to be believed, the mid-80’s Mets were pretty much allowed to run amuck. This just goes to show that if you have one iota of talent, the boss will let you get away with anything as long as he’s seeing wins on the field. Strawberry’s book “Straw: Finding My Way” tells it like it was. Booze, drugs, and women were always on the menu de jour, sometimes even during games. And Darryl’s not denying his part in it all, that’s for sure. These guys all sound like they were total tools.

“We were the boys of summer. The drunk, speed-freak, sneaking-a-smoke boys of summer,” writes onetime home-run legend Darryl Strawberry in “Straw: Finding My Way,” out in April from Ecco. “[An] infamous rolling frat party . . . drinking, drugs, fights, gambling, groupies.”

Beer “was the foundation of our alcoholic lifestyle,” he writes. “We hauled around more Bud than the Clydesdales. The beer was just to get the party started and maybe take the edge off the speed and coke.”

The team’s mantra on the road, he writes, was to “tear up your best bars and nightclubs and take your finest women . . . The only hard part for us was choosing which hottie to take back to your hotel room. Lots of times you . . . picked two or three.”

This article goes on describing more of the team’s seedy exploits.

Once again it looks like if you can play a sport, and play it well, you can get away with just about anything. Seahawk Jerramy Stevens sure seems to think so. His record goes back through college, and he constantly was able to get off lightly when it came to punishment (if he was even punished at all).

The worst incident involved Stevens allegedly raping a freshman while attending the University of Washington. Despite good evidence (in the form of friends’ and eye witnesses testimony) that the sex was non-consensual, the entire case ended up being thrown out on the grounds of insubstantial evidence. Poor girl.

Stevens also had a long history of drunk driving and hit-and-runs. Check out this article from the Seattle Times for the whole UW story. It also lays out the details of Stevens’ other “little” indiscretions. And each time a slap on the wrist. Ridiculous.

Elijah Dukes, outfielder for the Washington Nationals, has yet to learn to control himself when he’s seeing red. He has numerous arrests in his past. TampaBay.com has compiled this handy little list of his “little” indiscretions.

Hillsborough deputies were called to break up a fight between Dukes and NiShea Gilbert on Dec. 8, 2003, shortly after the birth of their child. According to an arrest report, Dukes threw a remote control at Gilbert and was arrested on an assault charge. Formal charges were never filed.

He was arrested again on Dec. 25, 2003, and accused of obstructing an officer without violence. Prosecutors allowed him to enter an intervention program.

On Oct. 12, 2004, Dukes was charged with misdemeanor battery. The case was never prosecuted.

He was arrested again on a charge of battery on Jan. 18, 2005. He did not contest the charge and the judge withheld adjudication, sentencing Dukes to one year probation and $549 fine.

According to the Tampa Police Department, one of Dukes’ ex-girlfriends filed a sworn request for prosecution against him on Jan. 24, 2005. The ex-girlfriend, Zanquesha L. Jefferson, told police that Dukes choked her with his right hand and forced her into a chair. He squeezed her cheeks while demanding a kiss, the records show. The outcome of the complaint could not be determined Wednesday.

Dukes’ most recent arrest was in January, when he was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. He pleaded not guilty.

This list does fail to mention the death threats he sent his ex-wife NiShea Gilbert soon after the divorce went through. Classy. He had a restraining order slapped on him before you could say “crazy ballplayer”.

Gilbert said Dukes later left a message on her voice mail saying, “You dead, dawg. I ain’t even bulls——-. Your kids, too.” She said he also sent a picture of a handgun to her cell phone. (source)

But the fun continues. Dukes managed to make a real jerk of himself when he impregnated a 17 year-old – and threw a bottle of Gatorade at her when she broke the news to him. Before this incident, Dukes already had a reputation with women due to him having 5 children with 4 different women. Here’s a word I’m sure isn’t in his vocabulary: condom.

Lawrence Taylor was a dynamic force on and off the field during his NFL career. As usual with the NFL, you just can’t seem to get great talent in the game with out great controversy and misbehavior in the player’s personal life. L.T. proves that formula to the letter. After only two years of playing in the NFL, he was already deep into the drug scene and abusing alcohol.

When Taylor was once asked what he could do that no outside linebacker could, his answer was, “Drink”.

L.T. was busted multiple times for cocaine usage, and he wasted thousands of dollars on drugs. Retirement only brought on more opportunity for abuse and Taylor landed in rehab twice.

During his career, in what can only be called a very sneaky but jerk move, L.T. would even hire prostitutes and send them to opposing team members to hopefully tucker them out before the next day’s game. What a shady jerk.

This article interviewing former flame Kimberly Bell says otherwise. Though I suppose she wasn’t telling us anything new.

In the days before he became violent, in the days before he threatened to chop off Kimberly Bell’s head and leave her body in a ditch, Barry Bonds would stand in front of a mirror and fret about how steroids were changing his body.

Oh yeah, did I mention that he became violent and started threatening Kimberly?

Bonds was always moody – “I always figured he had PMS, like a woman,” Bell said – but the drugs radically changed his behavior as well as his body. He became a different person, controlling, threatening and finally violent. “It went from ‘I want to know where you are at’ to ‘I’m gonna f—— kill you. I’m gonna cut your head off and leave you in a ditch.’”

Once again it seems that if you are good at playing football, authorities will let you get away with anything in order to see you score that next touchdown.

Irvin has been charged with drug possession, and an improper conduct with women. Later on he even falsified an attempted car jacking – claiming that when the gunman recognized him as a Dallas Cowboy, he put the gun down and chatted Irvin up instead of shooting him up. Ridiculous.

Irvin was also involved in a strange incident regarding scissors when he slashed the neck of Everett McIver. Whoa.
