Jose Offerman was arrested for assault after violently whacking Bluefish pitcher Matt Beech and catcher John Nathans in the head with his bat. After being hit with a fastball, hothead Offerman rushed the pitcher’s mound while brandishing his bat. He broke Beech’s finger. Nathans was hit in the back of head in the resulting melee and suffered a nasty concussion. This head injury resulted in Nathans’ early retirement, as he was unable to play afterwards.

“It was one of those moments that you want to forget. I lost it for about 10 seconds,” Offerman told the Connecticut Post. “That’s what happened to me. I didn’t have any intentions and I feel sorry for what happened and the way it happened.” (source)

Offerman’s teammates expressed their surprise at this violent reaction, claiming that he was always quiet and mild mannered. I guess it goes to show that jerks can come from anywhere and out of nowhere.
