Ponytail Shenanigans

Many of us are used to seeing hockey players playing dirty (and violent), and football players have been known to stoop to nasty levels in order to score that winning point. Now thanks to New Mexico’s Elizabeth Lambert, we get to see some of that below the belt playing out on the soccer field.

Check out this video of her nailing one girl in the spine with a well aimed punch, then Lambert wrenches another girl’s head back using only her ponytail. She hits the dirt and doesn’t get up.

RE: Marlon King Is A Jerk

Only a couple posts ago I covered Marlon King and his incredibly jerk-tastic actions. He’s never been known for being a footballing good boy, having already been imprisoned for theft. He has been convicted for 14 offenses since 1997. That many convictions sure does show that he likes to make court an annual event.

His most recent, of course, was him punching a 20 year-old woman in the face after she yelled at him when he grabbed her inappropriately (ahem, he is married). Now the poor girl, Emily Carr, has cast aside her anonymity to make sure the public can get a good look at the abuse that sports stars are often allowed to get away with.

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) – Two armed officials of Brazilian second division club Portuguesa accompanied by bodyguards threatened the players after a defeat this week, sparking coach Rene Simoes’ resignation on Wednesday.

Simoes said that on Tuesday night, after the Sao Paulo-based team lost 2-1 to Vila Nova, the men burst into the changing room with guns in their belts and slammed the players for allowing the team to drop six points behind the promotion places.

“They were four armed men and one appeared to be the boss,” Simoes told reporters.

Portuguesa, 1996 Brazilian championship runners-up who were relegated last year, named the leader of the four as Antonio Jose Vaz Pinto, a member of the club’s executive council, and said the bodyguards were off-duty police officers.

“Catching everyone by surprise…Mr Antonio Jose Vaz Pinto insulted the players and technical staff, showing a complete lack of control,” said a statement on the club’s website (www.portuguesa.com.br). It added that Vaz Pinto would be severely dealt with.

Simoes is a former coach of Jamaica and the Brazil women’s team.

Whoa. Brazil sure does take its sports seriously. But really, holding the players at gunpoint for only six points? Doesn’t that seem a little extreme?

I guess the guy in the number 3 blue jersey got hit in the face by number 9 in white. But does that really justify the beating and the flying drop kick? Though wow, this guy sure does get some air time!

Drinking isn’t the only problem

Paul Gascoigne definitely wasn’t the most balanced player in soccer. Granted, some of his quirks contributed to him being a fabulous player of the game, but they didn’t help when it came to him not being a royal pain in the backside. First, the man was a constant drunk. This habit got him fired after only 39 days as manager of Kettering Town. He was in and out of rehab, but it never did any good.

Gascoigne also managed to be arrested on assault charges in 2005, on the day of being fired from Kettering Town. Way to go jerk.
